Performing since he was 11, Kris spent his early years in various North Queensland towns and cities, from Cairns to Townsville, before his musician father brought the family to Brisbane and that became home in the true sense of the word.
Coming from a family of musicians, Kris was constantly surrounded by music and after picking up an acoustic guitar at a very young age, it was soon apparent he had inherited the family gene. However, deciding to make a career as a musician was not, at first, a clear cut one. With natural athletic skills, pursing a career in sports was also on the cards, but the two clashed regarding timetables and a choice had to be made.
“I had to choose between music and playing Rugby League, as they clashed on weekends. And, while I loved being on the footy field, ultimately choosing music was an easy choice to make – music is and will always be my passion and today, my livelihood, but I do often wonder ‘what if?’ Maybe I would have found success in sport – or just a lot of injuries!”
With the guidance and encouragement from his father and family in the early years, Kris initially chose to delve into the country music scene which saw him win many awards at festivals as well as release songs that made the Top 10 on the country charts with his music partner in their duo, Gravel Road. A few years on and Kris’s style has now moved into mainstream music. Inspired by the talents and anthems of the Bee Gees, Franki Valli, Michael Jackson, Crowded House, Bruno Mars, Guy Sebastian, and more recently hit-maker and balladeer, Ed Sheeran, Kris has his own unique style that is more than an amalgam of influences, but a product of his upbringing.
“Having a singer/songwriter as a father has played a significant role in my development as a musician. My father, Robbie Wason has been a huge impact from the beginning. His songwriting is amazing – if it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today”. Self-taught in every aspect in music, even vocals, Kris plays multiple instruments: Acoustic, Electric and Bass Guitar, Keyboards and Harmonica.
Kris’ versatile vocals and soulful guitar accompaniment are in demand interstate and in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast, where he is now based. “The Gold Coast is a great destination for weddings and corporate events, so it made sense to relocate here. And of course, it provides a fantastic outdoor lifestyle with the beaches, thriving night life and positive people.” From making a living playing weddings, parties, corporate functions and playing venues, Kris has generated the following and the professional reputation to dedicate himself solely to his craft. “It’s a joy to do what I love for a living. Being immersed in an industry that is so fulfilling, gives me a definite feeling it’s where I belong.” Like with most creative talents, Kris is passionate about each and every performance whether it is for an intimate dinner party or major corporate event. ”
“Most events are really significant ones, like with weddings which are the most important day in a couple’s life, so I want to make sure I deliver an amazing and special performance for them. That’s what drives me and helps me strive for higher standards every time. The audience’s response is what it’s all about; smiles on faces, beaming brides, people motivated to get up and dance or sing along.
Over the years, I have had many people approach me saying how much they enjoy my music and that makes me determined to follow my dream and establish myself in the entertainment industry – the next step is to release my original songs to the world!” With plans underway to record an album this year, Kris is in the process of writing music and lyrics which will see some songs released later in the year. And while music nurtures the soul, it’s about family and friends that Kris believes is what is instrumental in living a fulfilled life.
“Having a positive relationship with your family and friends is the key to happiness and success. I am so much more productive when I am feeling secure and supported. A special person who believes in anything you do helps you to work hard to achieve your goals.”
